Happy Birthday Abby

Abby turned three today. We have been talking about her birthday coming up for about a week now. She has been pretty excited. However, this morning I had a difficult time convincing her that today was her birthday. She seemed to think that it was something to look forward to that would never actually come. Once I had her persuaded the conversation went something like this:
"Happy Birthday Abby," said Mama.
"Happy Birthday Val," said Abby (Yeah, she has been calling me "Val" or even "Valerie" lately. It is pretty funny.)
"No, it isn't my birthday it is your birthday," said Mama.
Abby replied, "Now we can get married in the temple!"
Well, not quite right but at least it seems like a few things we talk about during Family Home Evening are sticking and she gave me a good little laugh.

Abby fell asleep just before her party so she was a little grumpy when we woke her up. She didn't want to open the presents, didn't want to eat the cake, and didn't care about blowing out the candles. But with a few snuggles and laughs from watching Andrew and Mack throw themselves into her room and onto the floor, she slowly became less grumpy. When we went into the other room and saw the presents piled on the table, she suddenly was in the birthday mood again and the present opening began. She got some very beautiful dresses (which she kept changing in and out of after everyone left), a purse with girl stuff inside, Cinderella with many dresses and slippers, a pink princess sweatshirt and sweet random toys from the Easton kids (I think the McDonald's happy meal American Idol toy was my personal favorite.)

Kate had to go home early because she couldn't handle that the gifts weren't for her. Seeing Cinderella and not playing with her was just too much. It kind of reminded me of Abby at her cousin Clarie's birthday a few years ago. I think Abby was afraid the other hovering kids were going to take her toys but she never actually hit them...yeah! The grump still appeared MANY times during the evening but we survived...barely!

I made my first princess cake at the request of Abby. Lisa had some great ideas and past experience that I leaned on and I think it turned out pretty good if I do say so myself!

...but not everything was edible...

  1. Honestly, I'm very impressed with the cake. I know who I'll be calling when Hattie requests something like that. You should've posted pictures of the 9 presents that the Eastons gave!
